LEMON MYRTLE (Backhousia citriodora) leaves
Australian Lemon Myrtle has been used for centuries by indigenous Australians. The leaves were chewed for hydration and a range of important vitamins & minerals as well as for their antimicrobial properties. After crushing into a paste they were used on sores and boils, and the leaves were burnt as an insect repellent. We now know that Lemon Myrtle is the world's richest known natural source of citral (90 - 98%) which is highly antibacterial, antimicrobial and antifungal. The leaves also contain lutein which is important for eye health, protecting the retina from damage by inhibiting inflammation, and other important antioxidants. Lemon Myrtle is often used to relieve the symptoms of colds, flu, bronchitis, indigestion and other irritable GIT disorders.
ANISE MYRTLE (Syzygium anisatum)
Indigenous Australians have traditionally used Anise Myrtle to flavour food, to make a revitalising tonic beverage and to reduce gastrointestinal disorders. It has a range of health promoting properties including high antioxidant activity as well as antifungal and antimicrobial effects. It is rich in magnesium and a good source of lutein, folate, vitamin , and vitamin C. It contains the flavonoid anethole which gives its aniseed flavour and aroma, but may also suppress inflammation and have anaesthetic, sedative, oestrogenic and antitumour activities.
NATIVE RAINFOREST MINT (Mentha Australis)
Native mint has been used by Indigenous Australians for centuries as a flavoursome bush food, natural insect repellant and medicinal herb. As a tea it was used to treat coughs and colds, fevers, headaches, and digestive disorders. Like most mint species it may be used to ease the stomach and relieve heartburn, relieve the congestion of a cold and as a natural antiseptic.
ROSELLA (Hibiscus sabdariffa)
Rosella flowers have been used throughout the world as native medicinals. Their extract has been used for lowering blood pressure, treating symptoms of tuberculosis, a hangover cure, and to treat dandruff, wounds, haemorrhoids and to stimulate hair growth. Rosella flowers are very high in vitamin C and recent research suggests that they can help relax the uterus, reduce blood pressure, relieve indigestion and alleviate symptoms of colds, respiratory issues and circulation disorders. There is also growing evidence that they may be effective in helping control metabolic syndrome.
